PGCE Primary Education Flexible Programme

COURSE INFORMATION

All primary education programmes at Northumbria are now category A (The highest possible category) after the recent OFSTED inspection.

This flexible qualification is designed to produce qualified teachers who wish to combine study with their existing lifestyle. It meets the Government’s regulations for Initial Teachers Training and equips the student with the knowledge, skills and understanding required to become an affective primary school teacher.

The subjects studied are delivered through web-based modules, supported by university tutors. Following the needs analysis and preliminary academic studies combined with school experience, students have the opportunity to carry out their first assessed school placement. Further study follows with the final activity being a final assessed block school placement.

All assessed placements will take place in the Newcastle, East Anglia, London, Birmingham, Leeds or Manchester areas. (To be confirmed) Students gain a sound knowledge and understanding of the primary National Curriculum, whilst obtaining experience, covering a range of activities such as observation, group and individual teaching tasks and responsibility for planning and teaching a significant proportion of the normal programme timetable. The newly-qualified teachers graduating from the programme will have a strong grasp of the primary curriculum, supported by the ability to be flexible and pro-active, to expect and respond constructively to change and above all, to act in an informed and positive manner to ensure children’s learning.

SELECTION

Shortlisted candidates will be invented for interview. They will undertake a maths and English task and a presentation. An individual interview will be conducted with a member of the University education staff and a local headteacher.

Any offer of a place is conditional upon satisfactory police clearance and medical report.

CAREERS

Most PGCE trainees are successful in entering teaching straight away. Career opportunities include teaching in maintained and independent infant, junior, primary, first and middle schools, as well as in other areas of education.

Compulsory Requirements:

Applicants should have attained GCSEs in English Language, Mathematics and a science at grade C or above. Recent experience of mainstream UK schools in the chosen age range is essential.

Standard Entry:

In addiction to the above, the applicant must have a good honours degree (2.1 or above) from a UK University, or an equivalent recognized qualification.

Other:

Candidates should be aware that, as this is a web-based programme designed for students unable to access traditional programmes, geographical location will be a factor in determining priority of place in the programme.

Within the previous year, and prior to application, applicants must normally have at least 15 days of experience in mainstream UK schools in Key Stage 1 and/or Key Stage 2 and this should be itemized on the application from.

This provision enables participants to train for either the 3-7 or the 5-11 age ranges. Candidates must declare a choice of age range and ensure they have appropriate experience within their chosen age range prior to interview.
