COURSE INFORMATION

Why study Museum and Heritage Management?

Participants on this programme will develop the skills required for effective museum and heritage management within the cultural sector. The programme is available in various modes allowing flexible study for those looking to add heritage management skills to existing professional profiles. From the outset, participants acquire professionally relevant management skills, including financial management, marketing and communication technologies. The programme aims to encourage cohesion across the sector and to encourage enterprise and entrepreneurialism amongst programme participants.

Students graduate with:

  1. the academic- and practice-based knowledge and skills required for effective heritage management.
  2. the ability to think critically, exercise independent judgement and evaluate complex information and ideas.
  3. project development and management skills.
  4. the ability to complete creative work to a professional standard.
  5. the ability to respond to a changing cultural environment.

COURSEWORK AND ASSESSMENT

A work-based project is undertaken within a heritage organisation of the student’s choice, which may be a current place of employment or own business. The student is expected to initiate and manage this project. A supervised dissertation is then undertaken, providing an opportunity to undertake independent research within the same field.

CAREERS

Careers may be anywhere within the heritage or the cultural sector.

Graduates may take up positions with management, curatorial or educational roles. They may work in museums, galleries, local authorities, or within Marketing, IT or Finance departments of heritage organisations.

Graduates may set up their own business, or work in a freelance or consultancy capacity.

FUNDING

Students may be self-financing or funding may be available from a variety of sources.

Standard Entry:

Candidates should possess one more of the following:

  1. A degree in an arts or humanities subject area.
  2. A proven interest in an aspect of museum or heritage management. Considerable relevant work experience supported by evidence that the work required use of a range of critical, analytical or management abilities.

Additional Notes:

English Language: Non-first-language English speakers must have a proven level of English language ability (IELTS 7.0 or equivalent).
