COURSE INFORMATION

This route provides students with a qualifying degree that gives exemption from the academic stage of training to become a solicitor or barrister. The course mixes academic study with the practical applications of law, and is a relevant qualification for a range of careers.

The Open Learning degree is ideal for those students who are unable to attend the institution regularly for tuition. All students are given an extensive set of study materials in each subject, including guidance notes.

The course is designed to give students an understanding of the operation of the English legal system, the diverse areas of law contained within that system and the methods employed by lawyers in using legal source materials. Throughout the route emphasis is placed on student-centred learning to foster research skills and initiative.

The course consists of the following subject areas:

  1. English Legal System
  2. Contract
  3. Criminal Law
  4. The law and Institutions of the EU
  5. Tort
  6. Public Law
  7. Property Law I and II
  8. Jurisprudence
  9. Dissertation

Four options to be chosen from:

  1. Medical Law
  2. Company Law
  3. Employment Law
  4. Evidence

Open learning degree facilities are provided via the Internet, including communication with staff, notice boards and subjects bulletin boards.

Standard Entry:

Applicants must be at least twenty-one years of age and demonstrate the necessary motivation, potential and knowledge to follow the course successfully. The normal minimum entry requirements are one of the following:

  1. Passes in two subjects at A Level with passes in three other subjects at GCSE level (at grade C or above);
  2. Passes in three subjects A Level with a pass in one other subject at GCSE level (at grade C or above);
  3. A BTEC Ordinary National Certificate or Diploma at a good standard;
  4. Other equivalent qualifications.

Additional Notes:

Applicants will normally be required to have obtained a pass in English Language at GCSE level. Applicants without this qualification and all those for whom English is not their first language will have to satisfy the University of their competence in written and spoken English. However, candidates without formal qualifications, who are able to demonstrate that they possess appropriate study skills, have relevant experience, possess the capacity to sustain a course of study and have the necessary intellectual ability will be considered for admission onto the course.
