COURSE INFORMATION
Why study Event and Conference Management?
Participants on this programme will develop the skills required for progression to management in event and conference organisations within the cultural sector. The programme is available in various modes allowing flexible study for those already working with the cultural sector looking to add event and conference management skills to existing professional profiles. From the outset, participants acquire professionally relevant management skills, including financial management, marketing and communication technologies. The programme aims to encourage cohesion across the cultural sector and to encourage enterprise and entrepreneurialism amongst programme participants.
Students graduate with:
- The academic- and practice-based knowledge and skills required for effective event and conference management.
- The ability to think critically, exercise, independent judgement and evaluate complex information and ideas.
- Project development and management skills.
- The ability to complete creative work to a professional standard.
- The ability to respond to a changing cultural environment.
COURSEWORK AND ASSESSMENT
A work-based project is undertaken within an event or conference planning organisation of the student’s choice, which may be a current place of employment or own business. The student is expected to initiate, negotiate and manage this project. A supervised dissertation is then undertaken, providing an opportunity to undertake independent research within the same field.
CAREERS
Careers may be anywhere within the cultural sector, from arts, media, and government bodies to the voluntary sector. Graduates may take up Event and Conference Management positions within an arts or cultural organisation or work within a Local Authority. Many graduates will set up their own cultural enterprises or microbusinesses, or work in a freelance or consultancy capacity.
